20 years ago, the elegant Helen Lewis was the favourite to win the Miss South Africa crown. She was beautiful and classy. Then the nutters on the Miss SA Committee decided to break the mould and select a winner that was "not your typical beauty queen".Needless to say we ended up with a Miss SA that was as unruly as her mop of frizzy hair, and we passed up on someone who would have worn the crown with dignity and grace. Helen Lewis was our Lady in Red in 1989.
