USA WINS MISS WORLD

Alexandria Mills from the USA, was crowned Miss World 2010 in Sanya, China a short while ago. Her runners-up were Emma Wareus (Botswana) and Adriana Vasini (Venezuela). Rounding out the Top 5 were the delegates from China and Ireland. Red-hot favourite,Mariann Birkedal (Norway), made it through to the Top 7 before being eliminated.

And just to disprove my theory about white contestants from South Africa, Nicole Flint was included in the Top 25 before being eliminated. I wonder if the precise rankings for the Top 25 will be made known. I'd like to think that Nicole finished in 8th place, but I suppose we'll never know.

MISS CLAP-EZ-UELA?

After a near-perfect record from 2007 to 2009 when my hot picks from Venezuela ended up placing 3rd, 1st and 1st respectively at Miss Universe, I called it correctly this year when Marelisa Gibson failed to make the cut (although I have to admit that I added her to my Top 15 at the last minute just because she was Miss Venezuela).

Given the quality of contestants at Miss Venezuela this year, I am a bit surprised at the result. Whilst Miss Venezuela-World, Ivian Sarcos, (right) has a good shot at the Miss World title next year and was my pick to win first place (Miss Venezuela-Universe), I'm not sure what to make of her counterpart Vanessa Goncalves who will compete at Miss Universe.

She honestly looks like a used Orange County housewife that was great-looking 20 years ago when she was young. For now, she's going to be Miss Clap-ez-uela at Miss Universe next year, unless Aunty Osmel has a trick or two up her sleeve.

2010 MISS SA FINALISTS!

If you refer to an earlier post you will note that I included 10 of these finalists in my list of "in" contestants. Had I been forced to select a Top 12 and not a Top 17 as I did, my "score" would have been 9 out of the 12. Not too shabby!

From these 12 finalists, my pick for Miss SA 2010 is Dhesha Jeram. Her court will more than likely include Bokang Montjane, Chanel Grantham, Dorah Mtetwa and Anja van Zyl (in no particular order).

TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK!

In a few hours, my theory about white contestants from South Africa not fitting into the Miss World "contrived diversity" mould will be tested. Nicole Flint is either going to be a "hit" or a "miss".

Since I am a huge fan of the gorgeous Miss Flint, I hope that I am wrong and that she will not suffer the same fate as Cindy Nell did back in 2003. I'm not holding my breath for a positive outcome, but will be over the moon if I'm wrong.

Good luck Nicole. Whatever the outcome, you will always be a special young lady.

THE NAMES OF THE 2010 MISS SA FINALISTS ARE...

... in this file. Find out who they are on Friday in YOU magazine.

SINDI NENE FOR IDOLS

I've been a tad busy of late, but make a point of watching Idols every week. My favourites since the beginning have been Sindi and Lloyd. The best thing that could have happened was when the judges saved Sindi a few weeks back and that she is still in the competition.

Not only is she a wonderful entertainer with a fabulous voice, but she is just so damn pretty. I can think of a whole bunch of former Miss SA finalists that look like her ugly older sisters in my opinion.

I'm not going to be very popular when I say that I am NOT on the Elvis Blue Express. Sure, he hugs a few trees and cuddles a few whales which is all very noble, but Idols is a singing contest and he is only ok. Given the demographic of the voting public, he will more than likely emerge as the winner next week.

Whilst on the topic of Idols, isn't it time to put Mara Lowe on display at the National Museum in the section for "Almost Local Stars"? She's pickled almost all the time and they only have to prepare her for the glass container. At her prime she was only just a competent lounge singer.

Apart from that, she sounds like a babbling idiot every time she opens her mouth. She makes Paula Abdul seem like an Einstein. Oi vey!

AND MISS OCTOBER IS...

Marzanne van der Merwe (20) from Stellenbosch was crowned Miss October at the Civic Centre in Kraaifontein last night. Her runners-up were Donique Leonard (18) from Mossel Bay, and Angelique Fouche (18) from George. The other contestants in the Top 5 were Alexia Kritikos (24) from Tygerberg Hills and Lee-Schae Solomons (19) from Bellville.

During preliminary competition Marzanne was named Miss Hot Body, and Donique was named Miss Lovely Legs. The other award winners were Lee-Schae Solomons (Miss Beautiful Hair) and Emray May (Miss Personality).

The SA Beauties Blog was responsible for "scouting" all the contestants that eventually finished in the Top 4 positions.

MISS OCTOBER PRIZES TOP R55,000

The prize package in the 2010 Miss October pageant has just topped R55,000 making it one of the richest pageants in the Western Cape in terms of prize package. With a day to go, and more prize confirmations expected, the prize package could grow still further.

Whilst the winners' share is a whopping R30,000, the prizes for the runners-up and finalists are pretty impressive as well. To view the prize package please click on the image above to be directed to the prize list.

Miss October will be crowned at the Kraaifontein Civic Centre on Saturday 23 October at 7pm. For tickets please contact Michelle at missoctober@live.co.za. Tickets are only R50 and the proceeds go to Bowy House in Paarl.

MISS OCTOBER PHOTO SHOOT

Ten of the thirteen Miss October finalists met at the Ruslamere Guest House & Spa in Durbanville on Sunday 17 October for a photo shoot. The finalists are (left to right) Nazmeera Le Cordeur, Lee-Schae Solomons, Emray May, Marzanne van der Merwe, Wilmarie Groenewald, Azelia Morkel, Donique Leonard, Remona Visser, Charne Visser and Alexia Kritikos.

After the photo shoot, the finalists travelled to Bowy House in Paarl where they spent time with the children who are all HIV-positive or have AIDS. The proceeds of the pageant this year go to Bowy House. To show your support for the pageant and this very worthy cause, please attend the pageant finals on Saturday 23 October to see who will be crowned Miss October 2010.

Tickets are only R50 and can be obtained from Michelle Gildenhuys at missoctober@live.co.za.

MISS WORLD BETTING

A tradition since the early days of the Miss World pageant has been the odds offered by betting houses on the contestants. Whilst other international pageants are also listed by betting houses, none quite match the level of that associated with the Miss World pageant.

Prior to the advent of the internet and other instant mass media services, the odds offered on the delegates were more often than not the only real guide as to who were the front-runners in the competition. For the larger part the bookies were spot-on, but often they got it horribly wrong and the winners were "outsiders" and the "favourites" have yet to pass the winning post.

What is glaringly obvious this year is that the Miss World organisation and the bookies are not in agreement as to which contestants will emerge in the top spots on 30 October. At least 5 of the uber-favourites have not even been included in the Top 40 of the Beach Beauty competition, and at least 15 contestants that they feel have absolutely no chance, have been included in that select group.

In any event, it's still early days with 12 days to go before the Grand Final, but if the bookies had their way, the following contestants would be called into the Top 15:

01: Miss Brazil
02: Miss Slovakia
03: Miss Colombia
04: Miss India
05: Miss Botswana

06: Miss Russia
07: Miss Ireland
08: Miss South Africa
09: Miss Denmark
10: Miss Eygpt

11: Miss Philippines
12: Miss Ukraine
13: Miss Norway
14: Miss Czech Republic
15: Miss Thailand

These rankings are based on the composite odds offered by four of the leading betting houses. The bottom five places will be filled by the winners of the fast-track events should they not already be on the list in a higher position.

SA WINS MISS TEENAGER

South Africa's Chante Jantjies has won the Miss Teenager pageant in Costa Rica. She beat more than 30 contestants from around the globe to win the title last night. Her runners-up were from Curacao, Romania, Aruba and Panama.

Bravo Chante!

MISS TEENAGER SA 2010

I'm not a big fan of teen pageants, but if there is going to be a local national teen pageant, I suppose that the winner should compete internationally. Chante Jantjies is South Africa's representative at the Miss Teenager pageant that is being held for the third time.

She will be up against some strong competition as there are a number of Latina Glamazons competing at the pageant. Best of luck to her for the final that will be held later today in Costa Rica. Chante recently handed over her Miss SA Teen title.

MM TO COMPETE AT MI

I've just checked the Miss International contestant list and note that Matapa Maila will be representing South Africa at the pageant early in November. Matapa competed at the 2008 Miss Earth pageant where she was unplaced.

Her participation at Miss International is probably courtesy of Beauties of Africa Inc, a pageant production company that promotes African beauties at various international events. They were responsible for sending Bokang Montjane to the 2009 edition of Miss International.

Matapa's participation is a tad surprising since I was under the impression that the cut-off age for entrants at Miss International is 23. Well it was 23 until recently. Given that black women traditionally don't perform well at this Japanese-run pageant, I'm also surprised that any organisation would spent time and money entering a black delegate.

I have always been of the opinion that Sun International should secure the Miss International franchise and send their white titleholders (or a white runner-up should Miss SA be non-white) to Miss International after her participation at Miss Universe. A non-white titleholder (or a non-white runner-up should Miss SA be white) should compete at Miss World and give the Miss International pageant a miss.

Merit aside, Nicole and Matapa will be competing at the "wrong" pageants. Nicole would stand a better chance at Miss International and Matapa would stand a better chance at Miss World of at least making the semi-finals in these pageants.

I could be wrong, but I don't think either contestant will be successful at the pageants they are attending. Not because they don't deserve to, but because they don't fit the mould.

I TOLD YOU SO

Two months ago, Nicole Flint had the 8th best body at Miss Universe. After lengthy sessions in the gym and the "tan can", she doesn't even have a body that qualifies as one of the 40 best bodies at Miss World. Huh? Whilst it's not over till the fat lady sings (replace with the Miss World snooze fest concludes), perhaps she didn't spend enough time in the "tan can" and Julia Morley still sees her as a "white chick from Africa".

A quick analysis of the Miss World results since 2003 reveals that at least one Miss World, 11 out of 45 Top 5 finalists and 58 out of 109 semi-finalists never qualified for the Beach Beauty preliminary competition. Whilst there is still an outside chance that Nicole will qualify for the semi-finals, a remote chance that she will qualify for the Top 5, and an extremely remote chance that she will win, I'm still of the opinion that she is going to suffer the same fate as Cindy Nell did in 2003.

My how things have changed. Perhaps we should just send a representative that fits the "Miss World African Semi-finalist" profile: Tall and boobless with thunder thighs. Throw in some synthetic extensions, and hey presto, we'll have a winner that rocks Julia Morleys rickety old boat.

It's really outrageous that a Ghetto Pommie dance hall queen wields so much power. Urghhh!!
