South Africa competed at Miss International from 1960 until 1968, and then once again in 2000. Whilst a number of contests have served to select South Africa's representative, the most popular title awarded to the representative was Miss National Beauty.
The only exclusive pageant to select a representative for Miss International was the Miss National Beauty pageant in 1960. In 1961 and 1962 the Miss National Beauty title was awarded to the winner of a photograph contest organised by Die Landstem.
For unknown reasons, the 1963 photograph contest organised by Die Landstem was called Miss Protea. From 1964 until 1967, the first runner-up in the Miss South Africa contest was awarded the Miss National Beauty title and she competed at Miss International.
South Africa did not compete at Miss International from 1969 until 1999, but in 2000, Irmari Steyl represented South Africa at Miss International although it is not clear whether she won a preliminary pageant or was a "contestant-at-large".
